Saburrtooth and I are back for Round 3 of the We Make Sawdust Challenge!
What is the “We Make Sawdust” Challenge? It is:

3 Carving Burrs
2 Weeks to Build
1 Build Challenge

The participants that were selected were:
Annette w/ 513 Woodworks
Tracey w/ Jasper Trail Home
Christopher w/ Crooked Hat Woods
After participants are selected they get sent out a Challenge box. Included in it are the carving burrs and a ton of other AWESOME stuff. This time the box was full of goodies from some of my friends. Pony Jorgenson included a classic hand screw clamp, which is great for clamping and holding pieces when carving. KEEN Utility gave each of them a pair of new work boots! Total Boat included some Wood Honey which is a food safe wood finish. Dremel included a new Dremel 3000. Panavise included one of their vises (301). And Forest 2 Home sent them one of their hardwood basics kits. Plus, Saburrtooth and I included stickers, t-shirts, coffee mugs and pencils… so everybody was definitely prepared.
Oh and the challenge was…. build/carve “SOMETHING YOU CAN HANG ON THE WALL”.
And let me tell you this challenge was full with some AWESOME talent! And each participant created a piece they should definitely be proud of.
Since I can’t win and was just carving along for fun, let me share my build with you first.
I started with a poplar panel that I had on hand and laser engraved a heart and border on it using my Glowforge. My laser is new to me and I am still learning how to use it. The carve took a long time, but came out awesome. Then I decided to use the Saburrtooth 1/8” Shank Sphere 3/8” (Coarse Grit) to add texture around the heart. This burr is definitely one of my favorite burrs. It is easy to use and leaves a super cool looking texture. Once I was done with that I painted the heart and the frame orange… of course! And the lastly, finished the piece with Total Boat’s Wood Honey. It is a food safe wood finish and really brought the poplar alive.
I love how it turned out and want to definitely make some more versions of this wall art.

Here is Annette’s build. This is her first time carving. She decided to go with a relief carve! She started by glueing several different colors of veneer together and then went with an abstract design that revealed the different color and layers. She named her piece Ärt. You can find more of her work at 513 Woodworks.
Here is Tracey’s build. She decided to use the three different kinds of wood that were in her challenge box from Forest 2 Home cherry, walnut and maple. And with them built three planter boxes and added a different texture to each use each of the three Saburrtooth burrs provided for the challenge. She then added all three planter boxes to the a black frame that really brought the pieces together. You can find more of her work at Jasper Trail Home.
Here is Christopher’s build. He is a woodturner and also decided to use the wood from Forest 2 Home. He glued up several panels and then turned them on his lathe. Then added texture to the pieces using the Saburrtooth burrs. And then lastly he attached the panels together to create on large turned and carved piece. You can find more of his work at Crooked Hat Woods.
Once all the builds were complete it was up to YOU to vote on your favorite. And that favorite was going to walk away with $300 in Saburrtooth cash, bragging rights and a prize pack from our brand partners… Pony | Jorgensen, Dremel, Forest 2 Home, Panavise, Total Boat and KEEN Utility!
But don’t feel bad for 2nd and 3rd place and they were going to get $200 and $100 Saburrtooth cash, respectively.
Thank you to Saburrtooth and all the participants for an AWESOME time! Without further ado, the winner of the We Make Sawdust Challenge Round 3 is… haha… not so fast, you have to watch video below to find out!
