Power Carving Ideas | We Make Sawdust Challenge - Round 4

I have 4 AWESOME power carving ideas for you! That’s right it is time again for another round of the We Make Sawdust Challenge. For this challenge I team up with Saburrtooth Power Carving Tools and we challenge 3 other makers to join me in carving one build challenge. This time the challenge was to carve “Something You Can Find in the Kitchen”. We made spoons, a skull candy bowl, three hardwood spice cellars and one margarita platter… let me show you!

Normally the challenge only includes 3 burrs, but this time we did something special and included four 1/8” shank burrs or Saburrtooth’s Spoon Carving Kit. It includes:

The participants also get a challenge box full of other goodies from some of our co-sponsors.

  • Panavise - Gave each participant a vise Model 314. This was my first time using this vise and it was AWESOME. Made it easy to adjust carving positions without having to unclamp and reclamp your piece constantly.

  • KEEN Utility - Gave each participant a FREE pair of work boots! And the have the best selection and most comfortable work boots for both men and women!

  • Total Boat - Gave each participant a bootle of their food-safe wood honey finish. I love this stuff on my spoons.

  • PONY | Jorgensen - Gave each participant two clamps… one ez-hold clamp and one hand clamp. You always need different ways to hold your pieces while carving.

  • Forest 2 Home - Gave each participant one of their premium hardwood ash kits. Love that these kits deliver milled wood ready to start making with.

The co-sponsors also host a giveaway on one of our weekly Instagram Live’s throughout the challenge. The Instagram Lives are great for growing the power carving community. We learn about the participants, the brands and tips about power carving. They are generally each Monday during the challenge.

Okay let’s get the carving! I’ll go first…. with spoons!

Participant #1 - Sadie Mae @theAwesome Orange

I wasn’t quite sure on what type of spoon I wanted to make so I ended up making 6! Here is the basic order I make my spoons in.

  1. Trace/draw on wood

  2. Cut excess wood off of blank at the bandsaw

  3. Remove the bulk of the inside scoop portion of the spoons using the 5/8” Rotosaw Burr.

  4. Shape the outside of the spoons using the 3/8” Dove Tail Burr.

  5. Refine scoop and outside of the spoon using the 1/4” Ballnose Burr.

  6. Sand…. 80 grit, 120 grit, 220 grit… water pop grain…. sand again with 220 grit.

  7. Apply a food-safe finish.

The two rotary tools that I used carving the spoons are both portable. See one here and the other here.

When carving you always want to be sure to use a dust mask… I am loving this full face mask I just got!

I learned some much from carving these spoons and keep getting better and better the more I carve… but I’d love to know which spoon is your favorite? Tell me in the comments below.

L to R: osage orange scoop, ash spatula, alder ladle, cherry ladle, burnt ash spoons.

Participant #2 - Liz @SpryCarvings

Liz is no stranger to carving, but usually she carves much bigger things using a chainsaw. Some of her carvings include bears, owls, dogs and more. This time she decided to carve a skull candy bowl. She used the ash wood that was provided by Forest 2 Home in the challenge boxes. She glued them up and then did what she does best… carve!

Participant #3 - Val @See.Val.Create

Val is a total newbie to power carving and mostly makes awesome laser projects and grows yummy stuff in her garden. So it was no surprise when she decided to carve three spice cellars. Each of them have a unique design on the outside. She even textures a lazy Susan stand for them that would be great for when she entertains.

Participant #4 - Katie @Addicted2DIY

Katie is no stranger to making or DIY, but this was her first go round at power carving. She choose to make a margarita platter from some local felled mesquite wood. She hollowed out a spot for the sale and the limes and then took the platter to her laser where she engraved… If you are going to be salty, bring the tequila! This carve definitely has me craving a margarita.
